Standards Information in Assignment Properties

A new feature has been added to the Assignment Properties link which provides a summary of standards within an assignment.

A Standards section has been added to the Assignment Properties table that displays both the count and percentage of questions correlating to state and/or Common Core Standards (where applicable) within a specific assignment. Individual question numbers linked to a particular standard can be viewed by clicking the number in the Count column, represented by a blue hyperlink.

The standard will also appear next to the question number in the Question IDs table at the bottom of the Assignment Properties box. If this link is clicked a summary of the standard appears in a window.

Primary Grade Reading Sets

The Castle Learning English Language Arts Curriculum Team has just released a new series of Primary Leveled Reading Sets. The new sets are geared towards early readers (Kindergarten, First and Second Grade). There are five theme-based reading sets, and each set has been written at three different levels.

  • Playground Fun!!! I, II, III
  • Buggy, Bug, Bug! I, II, III
  • Seasons! I, II, III
  • Firefighter! I, II, III
  • Our World! I, II, III
Buggy, Bug, Bug! Three levels of the same reading set

Example of the Castle Learning reading set for each of the three difficulty levels.

These sets are also unique in that students are able to view the reading set like an actual “book.” The student is able to “flip” pages as they read through the set.

All of the questions within these readings sets have been aligned to Common Core English Standards and correlated to both Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge.

Teachers can access these questions two ways:

  • Critical Reading Selections Topic on the Castle Learning Questions Tab
  • Castle Learning Reading Sets Tab (Levels A-C)

New Feature: Attach Documents to Individual or Multiple Questions

Do you have a document, website, PowerPoint or audio file that would be a great supplement to a portion of your Castle Learning assignment, but not all of it?  No worries!

Now you can attach a document to individual questions in an assignment.  This allows you to have multiple documents, and only have documents appear on the questions you choose.

New Quiz Mode Allows Students to Revisit Answers

In an effort to provide additional assignment flexibility, teachers can now allow students to modify their answer choices while an assignment is in Quiz Mode.  No Hints, Reasons or Vocabulary are displayed, but students have the option to refer back to a previously answered question and modify their answer.

To enable students to change answers in Quiz Mode check the box labeled “Allow Changes to Answers” when assigning in Quiz Mode.  The assignment mode will display as “Quiz with changes” on the Assignment Results tab.  To disable changes, change the assignment mode to Quiz Mode leaving the box unchecked, or select a different mode altogether.

Castle Learning Selects ReadSpeaker to provide audio access to its online classrooms

With ReadSpeaker’s leading online text to speech technology, Castle Learning offers enhanced accessibility to its students.

DEPEW, NY (USA)/ UPPSALA (Sweden) – January 17 2012 – Castle Learning Online has recently introduced ReadSpeaker’s web-based online text-to-speech solution to help students interact better with its web-based review, testing, and assessment tool.  Over 90,000 field-tested questions are now speech-enabled on the fly with near-to-human quality voices.

December 2011, which was the first month of ReadSpeaker’s online text-to-speech implementation on the Castle Learning platform, saw over 440,000 clicks on the listen buttons. The high level of usage by Castle Learning students demonstrates the usefulness of having a click & listen tool that doesn’t require any downloads for the end-user. The audio version of the Castle Learning platform enables all students including those that have cognitive issues, learning disabilities, and vision problems, as well as those who do not speak or read English as their first language, access the educational content and thereby improve their learning capabilities. The highlighting of the text as it is being read also reinforces a better understanding of the content.

“Many of our customers expressed the need for an integrated text-to-speech option, and we listened! Our partnership with ReadSpeaker is a cost effective way for schools to provide access to high quality content and an easy to use audio tool.”  said Nick Hall, Marketing Manager.

“We are thrilled by the rapid and positive reception of ReadSpeaker by Castle Learning students. Providing an audio alternative for Castle Learning’s material proves to be a must-have tool for users who have reading difficulties but also a comfort solution for all students,” says Joop Heijenrath, ReadSpeaker Co-Founder and responsible for ReadSpeaker’s business operations outside of Europe. “Having an audio version of online educational content is becoming a mainstream tool for learners and helps them access written content on all devices including smartphones and tablets.”

Skills Filter for Reading Sets

Skills Filter has been added to the Castle Reading Sets page. This allows you to specify one or more specific “reading skills”. Only Reading Sets that include questions with the selected skills are displayed for selection into your assignment.

The Reading Skills are:

  • Identifying Factual Information
  • Making Inferences and Drawing Conclusions
  • Understanding Vocabulary Usage based on Context
  • Identifying Main Idea or Theme
  • Identifying Mood and Tone
  • Identifying Multiple Levels of Meaning
  • Literary Forms and Devices

New Feature: Highlighting Text

Students now have the ability to highlight questions and associated text as an aid while working on an assignment.

At the bottom of the Question page is a new Enable Highlighting checkbox. When checked, a floating “Highlight” toolbar is displayed. The students can use their mouse to select any text, then click one of the highlighting buttons to set the background color of the selected text. Three highlighting colors are available.

A white “X” button in the Highlight toolbar removes the highlighting.

Note: Highlighting will not work if the student’s “Text Selection” access rights are disabled.  Teachers can modify access rights on the Access Rights tab of the Classes page.

New Feature: Teacher Override

There are occasions when a teacher wants to give a student credit for a question that was not answered correctly. For example, a student may have misspelled a fill-in answer or a dropped Internet connection prevented the student from completing a retry.

A new Teacher Override feature allows the teacher to do this. To give students credit for an incorrectly entered answer, from the Assignment Results page select the Responses report for the student. For each incorrect answer, there is an Override Option with three options:

  • None – which scores the question according to the student’s original answer
  • First Answer – which scores the question as if the student answered correctly on the first try
  • Retry Answer – which scores the question as if the student answered correctly on the retry

ReadSpeaker® Adds Accessibility to Castle Learning!

The Castle Learning experience continues to be enhanced, and this holiday season we are rolling out an early gift!  From now until August 30, 2012, all schools will have complimentary access to our new partner product, ReadSpeaker®.

Students will have the ability to click a Listen link within an assignment and hear an audio version (text-to-speech) of: questions, answers, hints, reasons, and even reading selections!   In addition to audio, students will see the text highlighted as it is read, providing a visually engaging environment to an audio stimulating function.

Students can play, pause or stop audio, and can modify their individual ReadSpeaker® settings to adjust:

  • Volume
  • Speed
  • Highlighting Options
  • Pop-up button display

Teachers can now provide students with this accessibility function without the need for an additional product.  If you have any questions please contact Customer Support.
