Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is an American-classic novel examining friendship, alliances, and the struggles of migrant workers during the Great Depression. It was published in 1937. Lennie and George’s unlikely bond and friendship faces the challenges and hardships of realizing the American dream.


The two find work on a new farm and meet a variety of people, all struggling in different ways. The realities of the life they lead test whether Lennie and George can survive together and reach their dream of owning a piece of land.


Themes of friendship, the realities of the American Dream, sacrifice, freedom, and the nature of human existence produced this novel into a timeless classic. Teachers continue to teach it for its themes and historical relevance.
